The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is currently leading the investigation into a deadly hit-and-run incident that occurred early Friday morning in Newark's Ironbound section.
According to preliminary information, emergency responders were called to the scene near Wilson Avenue and Hensler Street shortly before 3 a.m. after receiving reports of a person down.
Upon arrival, Newark Police discovered a severely injured male who had been struck by a vehicle.
Initial investigations revealed that the vehicle involved had fled the scene. East Ward detectives are actively searching for evidence and the responsible party.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office confirmed to RLS Metro Morning Crew at around 5:50 a.m. that the victim had succumbed to their injuries.
The office is now leading the ongoing investigation into this deadly encounter.
Authorities have cordoned off several blocks around Wilson Avenue as they continue to gather evidence.
County officials have stated that it is still early in the investigation and further details will be released as they become available.
