The remains of a woman found inside an abandoned house on Saturday night in Irvington has police investigating.
According to residents in the single digit block of Berkshire Place at Coit Street, police were called to the area after receiving reports of suspicious activities and a bad smell coming from the direction of two abandoned properties.
Upon arrival, police found the body of an unidentified woman who residents said they were familiar with but hadn't seen in about a week.
Police officers and detectives were on the scene shortly before 7:15 p.m. where the woman's body was removed from the house.
According to resident's several complaints have been made to the Township about drug activity, loitering, illegal dumping and prostitution that occurs inside both of the abandoned properties and others in the area but not much has been done to rectify the problem" a resident said.
An official statement for public information regarding the incident has gone unanswered by Irvington Police.
There are no official reports of suspicious activities.
UPDATE 3:23 pm The Essex County Prosecutor's Office cannot confirm a homicide investigation.
UPDATE 4:22pm The woman has been identified as Nafeesah Heyward. Her mother stated that she found her inside the house unconscious and unresponsive.
