Authorities have confirmed the recovery of the body of Brian Kolakowski, 37, of North Arlington, New Jersey, who was reported missing earlier this month.
According to a statement from the Kearny Police Department, Kolakowski and his vehicle were located in the Passaic River following an extensive investigation and recovery operation. The investigation began on December 4, 2024, when Kolakowski was reported missing to the North Arlington Police Department.
On December 6, Kearny Police Detective Kyle Plaugic reviewed security camera footage, which revealed Kolakowski's Volkswagen Jetta entering the Passaic River via the boat ramp at the Frank Vincent Marina in Kearny at 4:29 a.m.
This discovery triggered immediate recovery efforts.
Police drones were deployed to locate the submerged vehicle, which had drifted south from the marina, overturned, and sunk.
Recovery operations were hampered by poor weather conditions, low visibility underwater, and the vehicle's position, requiring several days to complete.
On December 10, 2024, the vehicle and Kolakowski's body were recovered by the New Jersey State Police Marine Services Unit, along with divers from the State Police TEAMS Special Operations Section and assistance from Moran Towing.
Kolakowski was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office was called to respond.
His family was promptly notified of the tragic outcome.
Authorities have stated that there is no evidence of foul play or criminal activity related to the incident, and there is no indication of any broader threat to public safety.
The Kearny Police Department expressed gratitude to the North Arlington Police Department, New Jersey State Police, Moran Towing, and all other agencies involved in the recovery efforts. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Kolakowski during this difficult time,” the department stated.
