Newark police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a deceased person inside an abandoned structure in the city’s Central Ward on Monday. According to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé, officers responded to a call at approximately 1:10 p.m. reporting a body found inside the old Essex County Jail at Central Avenue and New Street.
Upon arrival, police found an unconscious and unresponsive man in one of the cells.
The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the deceased remains unknown, and the incident is still under investigation.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has not yet announced its involvement in the case.
