BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- Beginning Monday, September 9, contractors will be making repairs to Berkeley Ave. that will span from Franklin St. to Montgomery St. Work will continue every weekday for six to seven weeks.
During this time, no through traffic will be permitted, but residents of Berkeley Ave. will have full access to the streets undergoing repairs.
This project is being funded by a $491,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
The project is anticipated to be completed within 60 calendar days, weather conditions permitting.
Repair work for this project includes curb replacements along both sides of the street, after which the contractors will begin milling and paving.
Milling involves removing up to two inches of the pavement, so when crews pave over it with new asphalt, the road stays flat. In addition to paving and curbing, compliant ADA handicap ramps will be provided at all intersections and enhanced pavement striping to promote traffic calming.
A. Takton Concrete Corp is the contractor for this project, and has already done work with the Township reshaping concrete sidewalks, among other projects. Work will be done during the day time on weekdays. During every phase of work, Bloomfield Police Department personnel will be on site, assisting with traffic, and have already begun informing neighborhood residents of the planned work.
“Fairview School is just North of where crews will be doing construction, but we decided to schedule this project after the school year began started so parents can get familiar with the area, and be better able to utilize our detour routes,” said Director of Public Safety Samuel DeMaio.
“Detour signs are posted and local residents will be given access into their homes. Detour routes will keep all surrounding streets both-ways, minimizing inconvenience for residents.”
Fairview School is the only school close enough to this site to slightly affect dropoff and pickups for parents. Road closure alerts are posted online at https://www.bloomfieldtwpnj.com/CivicAlerts.aspx?CID=5.
