Police in Newark received some assistance from a Bloomfield animal rescue worker/Newark animal activist that ran from her house when she learned two dogs were running away from police on Route 21 in Newark.
Several police units began to pursue the two dogs that somehow got away from them and began running on busy Rt. 21 near 3rd Avenue at around 11 a.m.
A Newark animal activist living nearby (who only goes by the name of "Gagi") jumped from the bed when she received a call from her husband and was informed about the incident.
" I got a wake up call that two dogs were loose on Rt. 21 that no one could catch them, so I grabbed the slip leads, stinky treats, and a squeaky toy and dashed out the house said Gagi who also serves as a rescue volunteer for Pitty Rescue Inc. based out Bloomfield http://www.pittyrescue.org
While Gagi was headed to the scene, police attempted to box-in the fleeing animals causing some minor traffic delays on the roadway which gave Gagi some additional time to reach the destination.
" I drove around for a bit and they were no where in site. Believing that the dogs may have already been captured by police, I began to turnaround and go back home when I drove a little further up Route 21 and there they were" Gagi said with excitement.
Police using extreme caution in traffic control, continued to keep the animals in clear site while holding traffic coming off of the highway until they could corner the pets when they saw Gagi exit a vehicle with several items in her hands.
"As I jumped out my car, the dogs immediately responded to the squeaky toy which allied a police SUV vehicle to cautiously roll up to help me" Gagi said.
Once the police got close, the dogs took off running again Gagi said. Officers nearby were able to grab one of the dogs while Gagi entered her vehicle an began to go after the other.
"Police were good in getting the male dog but I drove around the block and the female was in the middle of Rt. 21. Thankfully she loved the squeaky toy and she came back to me and I leashed her up" Gagi continued.
Residents said that the dogs may have been left abandoned by a former owners of a tow company but police could not confirm these accounts.
"It's scary and sad when you see lost or abandoned dogs. My first concern is for their safety. Police did a great job in making sure the dogs were safe even on busy Route 21" Gagi concluded.
Gagi encourages all to visit the Newark human society where there are many pets available for adoption.
