Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli announced the arrest of a 65-year-old New York Man accused of inappropriate sexual activity with 16-year-old student of Bergen County Academies where he teaches.
On April 13, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Special Victims Unit arrested Dewitt after learning that he engaged in inappropriate sexual activity with a sixteen year old female student at Bergen County Academies.
Dewitt is a faculty member at Bergen County Academies and teaches numerous courses at the school. The victim’s sister discovered sexually explicit email correspondence between the victim and Dewitt and advised their mother of her findings.
The victim’s mother then contacted her local police department who notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Computer Crimes Unit. The victim’s mother and sister advised her that she needed to speak to law enforcement authorities about this information. Arrangements were made for the victim to be interviewed by detectives at the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in Paramus on April 13. During that interview, the victim provided specific details regarding what had occurred with Dewitt.
In addition, email correspondence between the victim and Dewitt were turned over to detectives and reviewed. The ensuing investigation resulted in the arrest of Dewitt.
Dewitt was charged with one count of attempted sexual assault, one count of endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of criminal sexual contact.
Bail for Dewitt was set by the Honorable Menelaos W. Toskos, J.S.C., at $300,000.00 with no ten percent option, no contact with the victim and the surrender of his passport as a condition of bail.
He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.
