Belleville’s Moving to Re-Open Its Municipal Parks

Belleville

BELLEVILLE, NJ – APRIL 30, 2020 – Belleville is moving quickly to re-open its municipal parks after Gov. Phil Murphy signed an executive order late Wednesday to allow for the use of state parks, golf courses and other public spaces.

Murphy’s Executive Order No. 133 will allow for “passive recreation” — running, hiking, biking, fishing, boating, kayaking, horseback riding among other activities — in state and county parks starting at sunrise Saturday.

Mayor Michael Melham said the Township will also be looking at removing the covers from the municipal parking meters and resuming street sweeping.

“During this time when theaters, salons and other businesses are closed, having access to outdoor activities is more crucial than ever,” Melham said.

“With warmer spring weather hopefully right around the corner, we are happy to re-open our parks.”

Melham, however, stressed that residents must still exercise social distancing while they are passively recreating.

And, as Murphy said earlier Thursday, Belleville strongly encourages its residents to wear face coverings when they come near others.

Dovetailing with Murphy’s executive orders, Belleville wants to remind its residents that picnics and team-like sports are still not permitted in public spaces.

“We must continue to observe social distancing and take other measures that will help mitigate the spread of COVID-19,” Melham said.

“That said, this is a great first step toward returning to normal.

So, take this opportunity to get outside and enjoy some fresh air.”
