Police in Belleville are investigating circumstances behind a child found with a gun inside a middle school today.
Belleville authorities told RLS Media that officers received a concerning report of a student in possession of a weapon at Belleville Middle School, located at 279 Washington Avenue.
Officials said the incident unfolded at approximately 11:20 AM, prompting a swift response from Belleville Police, who collaborated with School Security to locate the student in question.
Subsequently, law enforcement recovered a BB gun from the student's backpack.
As a precautionary measure and in the interest of student safety, the school was immediately placed in lockdown during the police presence.
The young student found with the BB gun is now facing charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, police said.
Belleville School officials swiftly informed parents and the community about the incident through a message stating,
“This morning, Belleville Middle School was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure for a police-involved event. The lockdown was lifted, and all students were safe, with classes resuming almost immediately."
The message further commended the coordinated efforts of students, faculty, administration, safety services, and the police department in ensuring a safe environment for all students.
The message also contained a stern reminder that any student found in possession of a weapon, toy/pellet gun, or any device capable of firing objects would face criminal charges, as well as the possibility of suspension and expulsion.
Both the Belleville Public Schools District and Belleville Police Department reiterated their unwavering commitment to providing a safe environment for all citizens.
As the investigation into the incident continues, the authorities will work diligently to gather all relevant information and ascertain the circumstances surrounding the presence of the BB gun on school grounds.
