Avenel Man Shot After Pointing Handgun at Police

Avenel

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced today that a preliminary investigation has determined that Woodbridge police repeatedly ordered an Avenel man to drop his handgun before he pointed it at them, forcing them to open fire.

The investigation into the police shooting of Rodney Jencsik, 49, further determined that there were multiple weapons in his residence when he was fatally shot on October 5, 2015.

Jencsik was shot after he returned from Old Bridge, where he apparently stabbed two people, one of whom died from her wounds. A 50-year-old man remains in stable condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

The police-related shooting is actively being investigated by members of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and has been reported to the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General in accordance with the state’s use of force guidelines for police.

The results of the investigation will be reviewed by the Attorney General’s Office.
