A 37-year-old Newark man was taken into custody after the car he was driving was identified as stolen, thanks to an automated license plate reader.
According to authorities, at approximately 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening, officers from the 3rd Precinct were patrolling the Riverview Public Housing Complex as part of an initiative to increase safety. As the officers passed by a Ford traveling in the opposite direction, the police vehicle’s automated license plate reader alerted them that the vehicle was stolen out of Kearny.
The officers conducted a motor vehicle stop and arrested Roberto Rivera who was charged with receiving stolen property.
This charge is merely an accusation. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
