An investigation is underway into the person/s that vandalized a charter school located in the city's downtown.
Police arrived at North Star Academy Charter School located in the teens block of Central Ave. shortly before 11:45 a.m. where they found one of the school's front windows smashed from what appeared to be the result of a thrown rock or gunfire.
Several college residents looking on from their apartments on Halsey Street Street said that they did hear what sounded like a "backfire" from a vehicle shortly before 6:30 a.m. this morning but could not confirm anything further. It is not immediately clear the exact time the school was vandalized.
Employees at a nearby diner said that the school hasn't been open for more that three years and is relatively a brand new building.
According to the school's website, the school is the winner of the 2011 National Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence, and has recently been featured in the a prominent New York newspaper, the Times Magazine, and PBS.
School officials could not immediately be reached for comments.
A large portion of glass littered the sidewalk while police stood guard awaiting investigators to arrive.
There were no reported injuries.
