Authorities Investigate Vandalized Newark Charter School

Newark New Jersey

An investigation is underway into the person/s that vandalized a charter school located in the city's downtown.

Police arrived at North Star Academy Charter School located in the teens block of Central Ave. shortly before 11:45 a.m. where they found one of the school's front windows smashed from what appeared to be the result of a thrown rock or gunfire.

Several college residents looking on from their apartments on Halsey Street Street said that they did hear what sounded like a "backfire" from a vehicle shortly before 6:30 a.m. this morning but could not confirm anything further. It is not immediately clear the exact time the school was vandalized.

Employees at a nearby diner said that the school hasn't been open for more that three years and is relatively a brand new building.

According to the school's website, the school is the winner of the 2011 National Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence, and has recently been featured in the a prominent New York newspaper, the Times Magazine, and PBS.

School officials could not immediately be reached for comments.

A large portion of glass littered the sidewalk while police stood guard awaiting investigators to arrive.

There were no reported injuries.
