Authorities Identify Newark Man Fatally Shot by Police

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a police involved shooting that occurred yesterday at approximately 4:30 p.m. between Spencer Street and Lindsley Avenue in Newark.

Authorities said the preliminary investigation indicates that Talif Scudder, 33 of Irvington was shot and killed by Newark Police responding to a scene in which a 16-year-old male was shot allegedly by Scudder.

Scudder was pronounced dead at the scene at 5 p.m.

Police said the teenager was transported to University Hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Police responded to the incident quickly because they were already in the area investigating a separate, unrelated incident in which a female was shot on 18th Avenue between West End Avenue and Alexander Street.

The investigation of the police involved shooting, which is being handled by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau, is active and ongoing.
