Authorities Identify Man Shot Dead in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the fatal shooting of Thomas Smith, 43, of Newark.

According to authorities, at approximately 11:30 pm Newark Police officers were patrolling the area when they heard shots fired in the 800 block of South 14th Street.

When they arrived to the scene, they discovered Smith suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

The investigation is active and ongoing. At this time no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

According to unconfirmed reports, a person at the scene approached investigators, claiming to have video footage of the incident.
