Authorities ID Man Killed in Route 78 Crash in Union

Police have identified the 40-year-old Budd Lake man killed in yesterday's crash on Route 78 in Union.

According to police, Basim Othman, 40, was driving a 2013 Honda Accord around 11 a.m. Monday, when he went of the road, rear-ending a DOT pickup truck that was parked off the road assisting another driver with a flat tire near mile marker 51.5. The DOT then struck the disabled vehicle, a 2000 Honda Accord.

Othman who was entrapped in the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene 30 minutes later.

The driver of the DOT pickup - later identified as 66-year-old William Smolder of Hillsborough – and the man in the disabled vehicle - later identified as 50-year-old Sunil Dadlani, of Jersey City – were transported to Morristown Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash accident remains under investigation.
