Officials have released the identity of the 2-year-old killed yesterday morning after she was hit by a mail truck while in the arms of her grandmother as they across Rahway Avenue.
First responders rushed to the area of Rahway Avenue and Chilton Street at around 10:30 a.m. where they found a 55-year-old Anna Chacon (grandmother), 2-year-old Sofia Flores and a 4-year old boy suffering injuries at that location.
According to reports, Chacon was carrying Sofia in her arms when the postal truck struck her and the other child that was walking with her.
Sofia was taken to Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, were according to officials succumbed to her injuries at 11:09 a.m.
The grandmother was transported to University Hospital in Newark where she is currently in critical but stable condition. No information was provided on the condition of the second child involved.
The driver of the United States Postal Service truck was taken to police headquarters. No updates were available on the driver.
The incident remains under investigation.
