Attempted Assault Thwarted at Riverside Square Mall: Suspect Arrested

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of Craig L. Herbert, a 30-year-old resident of New Milford, NJ, on charges related to an attempted sexual assault at the Riverside Square Mall in Hackensack, NJ.AdOn Friday, July 26, the Hackensack Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit about an alleged attempted sexual assault that occurred the previous evening at the mall.

A collaborative investigation, including detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, the Hackensack Police Department, and additional support from the New Milford and River Edge Police Departments, revealed that an unknown suspect followed an adult female victim into a women’s restroom.

There, he allegedly shoved her to the floor and attempted to assault her.

The victim managed to fight off her attacker and called 9-1-1. The suspect fled but was captured on security footage.

Detectives identified the suspect as Craig L. Herbert of New Milford and apprehended him on the afternoon of July 26 in Paramus.

Herbert was charged with several offenses, including attempted sexual assault, criminal restraint, criminal sexual contact, and simple assault.AdHe was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
