Armed Standoff with Distressed Man in Newark’s East Ward Ends Peacefully

A tense standoff involving an emotionally distressed man armed with knives came to a peaceful resolution Saturday evening in Newark's East Ward.LegalAuthorities were dispatched to the area of McCarter Highway shortly before 4:50 p.m. after receiving reports of a man threatening to harm himself.

Responding officers encountered the individual, who had already sustained self-inflicted stab wounds to his head, torso, and chest.

Emergency Services Units were called to the scene to assist. After a brief negotiation, officers successfully persuaded the man to put down the weapons and surrender without further incident.

EMS transported the unidentified individual to University Hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries. Officials confirmed that no other individuals were harmed during the incident.

The circumstances leading to the standoff remain under investigation.Legal
