Authorities announced the arrest of Karon Mays, 20, of Newark, in connection with a robbery today.
Police said at approximately 7:30 a.m., detectives from the Newark Police Fugitive Apprehension Team (F.A.T.) were patrolling the area of West Runyon Street and Jellif Avenue when they observed two males on the ground fighting.
A 23-year old male victim had been robbed of his cell phone and backpack by the suspect, Karon Mays, who had pointed what appeared to be a gun wrapped in a brown paper bag at the victim and demanded his property police said.
After taking the victim’s property, Mays, wearing a black mask, struck the victim and fled.
The victim caught up with Mays and fought with him until police arrived on the scene.
F.A.T. detectives arrested Mays who was still wearing the mask when they arrived to the scene without incident.
He is charged with Robbery and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
These charges are merely an accusation.
The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
