Newark Police are investigating a reported carjacking in the city’s North Ward that left a man injured with a gunshot wound on Saturday night.The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. near 291 Mount Prospect Avenue, where a ShotSpotter device alerted authorities to gunfire.
Responding officers found evidence of a shooting at the scene, but a search of the area did not reveal any victims.
Shortly after, Clara Maass Hospital officials notified police that a man had walked into the emergency room with a gunshot wound to his leg.
Upon interviewing the victim, officers learned that an armed suspect had approached him on Mount Prospect Avenue, fired shots, and attempted to carjack his vehicle.
Police located the victim’s vehicle, which had a shattered window consistent with a shooting. Mount Prospect Avenue between 2nd and 3rd Avenues was shut down as officers conducted an investigation.
The victim is reported to be in stable condition. Police have not announced any arrests, and the investigation remains active and ongoing.
