Authorities in Newark are investigating a police vehicle crash that caused injuries to several victims early Monday morning in the city's South Ward.
According to police, two police vehicles and civilian cars collided at the intersection of Hawthorne and Chadwick avenues at approximately 2:35 a.m.
Police say one of the vehicles was a carjacked and led Newark Police on a high-speed chase. The suspected vehicle collided with a police car then the male carjacker bailed from the car, somehow causing him to ultimately become trapped under the police unit.
Newark emergency responders arrived and were able to extricate the trapped suspect then assist two injured police officers and two other civilians.
Police say all of the victims were transported to University Hospital for treatment with the suspect suffering severe injuries.
A weapon was recovered at the scene
The incident is under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
