ALERT: Suspect Wanted for Robbing Newark Central Ward Supermarket

Newark

Police officials in Newark request the public's help with identifying a suspect who assaulted an employee during a robbery at a supermarket on July 16.

Officials said Newark Police responded to a report about a robbery that occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. at the Tavarez Supermarket, located in the 200 block of Springfield Avenue.

According to police, the suspect didn’t have the right amount of money to pay for several items and attempted to walk out of the store, but the cashier locked the door with a magnetic locking device.

When the suspect couldn't leave, he broke a section of the glass door and was confronted by another employee. He punched in the face, causing the man to fall to the ground.

Police said the suspect, a Black male, left after the store unlocked the door.

He fled westbound, walking on Springfield Avenue and was wearing a red and white checkered shirt, light blue jeans, and black sneakers.

Interim Director Malave urges anyone with information about the suspect to call the Police Division’s  24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695- 8477).
