According to authorities, an arrest warrant on weapons and drug charges has been issued for a suspected armed drug dealer following an incident that occurred on Friday, October 29, at the intersection of Springfield and Avon avenues in Newark.
Officials say, responding to this location this past Friday, a known drug trafficking area, according to Sheriff Armando Fontoura, detectives from his department's Bureau of Narcotics again conducted a plainclothes surveillance operation.
Officers say they witnessed multiple hand-to-hand transactions of personal items for cash between the investigation's target, Cornell Brown, 41, of Newark, and passers-by from his 2014 Audi sedan.
"When our officers moved in to investigate further, Brown accelerated his vehicle to the sidewalk and fled the scene," the sheriff said.
The ongoing investigation led the sheriff's officers to a 2 Center Street address where the Audi was found, officials say.
"A search warrant for that location yielded two loaded semi-auto handguns, one of which was found stolen on May 18 out of Virginia, 32.5 grams on heroin, 5.6 grams of crack cocaine and 28.6 grams of ecstasy," Fontoura noted.
Authorities say Brown was previously arrested on similar drug charges at that same location on October 19 but was released pending a future arraignment date.
