In a heartwarming holiday tradition this week that began six years ago, some of Newark's 'finest' Police Officers and some brave firefighters, united through their shared love of softball and community service, delivered over 70 bicycles to children across Newark as part of their 6th Annual Christmas Bike Drive.
RLS Media learned that what started as a simple act of kindness has blossomed into a cherished holiday event.
Six years ago, a group of Newark Police Department (NPD) officers—members of the NPD Softball Team—were shopping for supplies at a local Walmart when they noticed a woman browsing bicycles for her young child.
Despite her best efforts, the prices were out of reach. The officers, touched by the scene, quietly stepped in and purchased the bike for her.
That day, the surprise and joy on the child’s face planted the seeds for what would grow into a larger philanthropic mission.
Since that first bicycle, the NPD Softball Team, now joined by firefighters, has distributed over 200 bikes to children across Newark.
Each year, team members personally purchase one bike each, while additional donations from community leaders and local organizations help expand their reach.
On Friday, December 20th, the gym at Newark’s 2nd Precinct, 1 Lincoln Avenue, was filled with laughter and excitement as children received their gifts.
Newark Public Safety Director Emmanuel Miranda and Chief Sharonda Morris were present to show their support, celebrating not only the holiday season but also the sense of community that the event fosters.
As part of this year’s initiative, the team also extended their generosity to Elliott Elementary School in the North Ward, donating 10 bikes to students there.
This annual bike drive has become more than just a holiday giveaway. For these officers and firefighters, it’s a way to give back to the city they serve—a reminder that their commitment to Newark extends beyond fighting crime or fires.
It’s about uplifting the community, one small act of kindness at a time.
In this case, crime-fighting may be their official duty, but for this extraordinary group of public servants, 'Newark's Finest and Bravest,' embracing humanity and spreading joy truly fuels their spirit.
