The track coach told me, O.L., if you spend all your energy at the beginning of the race, you'll have nothing left to finish. You have to pace yourself.
I had to learn to pace.
I'm naturally a sprinter, which means I run short distances fast. In learning to pace myself, I had to resist the urge to go against reason and remember I was in the race to win it, not burn out. Although there were still moments of sprinting, building a business and legacy with my wife was also a long game.
This long game of building requires wisdom that can be summed up into three primary categories: spacing, pacing, and facing.
Spacing: Spacing is like good penmanship. You can easily read all the words-they're not bunched up on each other Likewise, neither should all the things on the to-do. The difference with good handwriting is that it has breath between each word, making it legible and pleasing to read.
Pacing: Seeing a champion marathon runner go long distances with grace and skill is incredible. That's because they understand pacing. While speed plays a significant role, so does preserving energy. Building a legacy is like a long-distance marathon. As husbands, we must learn to pace ourselves.
Facing: This last category is about frequently creating actual 'FaceTime' with your wife this week. FaceTime deepens connection, helps with day-to-day clarity, and emotionally keeps you on the same page. This can happen with great intentionality, even when schedules are incredibly full.
With so many demands, it's easy to get so engulfed in everything that must be done that we neglect quality time, one of the most important relationships. Protect your FaceTime this week.
