Essex County officials are investigating a murder that occurred in Newark’s Thursday evening.
At approximately 6:35 p.m., police received 911 calls reporting shots fired in the vicinity of 19th and Avon Avenue.
When police officers arrived, they found Mr. Elijah Byrd, 25, of Newark, suffering bullet wounds.
Byrd was pronounced dead a short time later, officials said.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene and has not been apprehended.
Police have not released the motive for the shooting at this time.
Residents said the intersection is a haven for loitering, gang activity, shootings, and the sale of illegal narcotics.
