A local pond were family and friends of a Newton man gathered to celebrate Memorial Day turned tragic after the man drowned, according to police.
According to officials, police were called just before 6:20 p.m. Monday for a report of a man in distress at Heater's Pond.
The unidentified man - who did not make it to shore after attempting to swim back from a floating dock - was later pronounced dead at Newton Medical Center just before 8:30 p.m.
The official cause of death has not been determined.
According to police, the pond was not open for the season or staffed with lifeguards.
The incident remains under investigation.
