20-Year-Old Man Killed by Gunfire in Newark

An early Friday morning fatal shooting that occurred in the city's West Ward has authorities from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office searching for a suspect.

According to a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office the victim has been identified as Tyree Scott, 20, of Newark.

Authorities said, at around 11:25 a.m., police responded to a housing complex in the 50's block of North Munn Avenue (Bradley Court) near Speedway Avenue School and Vailsburgh Park after receiving reports of shots fired in the area.

Arriving officers reportedly located Scott unconscious and unresponsive suffering an apparent gunshot injury.

Scott was rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:04 p.m. according to the spokesperson for the prosecutor's office.

This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to the spokesperson.
