Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura have announced a $15,000 reward through the Crime Stoppers Program for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for a fatal shooting in Newark’s Weequahic Park in 2018.
On the evening of August 6, 2018, 25-year-old Godfrey Jones Jr. was with a female companion in Weequahic Park when two suspects approached them.
According to the female companion, the suspects asked Jones Jr. for his name before one of them shot him.
Witnesses described the suspects as two Black males.
One was reportedly thin and wearing a baseball cap with white lettering, while the other was heavier set with a full head of hair under a stocking cap.
The suspects were seen leaving the area in a 2015-2018 four-door Nissan Altima.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward. Tips can be submitted confidentially to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC (1-877-847-7432).
The $15,000 reward stresses the ongoing commitment to bringing those responsible for this senseless act of violence to justice.
