Authorities today confirmed the death of a 14-year-old teen who collapsed Wednesday night during basketball practice at School 27 in Elizabeth.
The Patrick School teen was playing basketball at School 27, located on the 500 block of Morris Avenue, in Elizabeth when he complained of feeling light-headed and dizzy to the coach at approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday.
As the student walked to the bleachers, he collapsed. According to police, the teen was rushed to Trinitas Hospital shortly after 8 p.m., where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
An autopsy was being performed today and authorities are awaiting results to determine the cause, although police do not suspect foul play.
The teen who was playing for 30-40 minutes prior to his collapse, showed no signs of being ill.
Grief counselors from the Elizabeth School District will be available at the school, according to officials.
