Tensions Escalate As Police Investigate Early Morning Shooting

Jersey City

Heavy police presence in the area where a rookie police officer was gunned down over the weekend had police investigating a shooting that occurred around 2:30 this morning.

Police roped off a large area near the Dunkin Donuts located at Martin Luther King Drive and Edge Ave. to investigate the early morning shooting that sent one person to the hospital in an unknown condition.

The investigation focused on a Police Emergency Services Unit's vehicle that had a hole in it after being struck by a bullet or other object being thrown at the vehicle.

A source told us that the suspect threw a "spear-like" object into the emergency services unit, possibly injuring several officers after which police opened fire on the man seriously injuring him. The officers were not reported to be seriously injured. These accounts have not been confirmed by authorities at this time.

The man was taken to Jersey City Medical Center where he is undergoing surgery according to the source.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office are handling the investigation.
