Irvington Township

By: Richard L. Smith

Police in Irvington Township took two Newark juveniles into custody and charged them with stealing a car with a child inside, then abandoning the vehicle several streets away.

It happened just before 8 a.m. at 114 Elmwood Avenue.

Police say the driver strapped his 7-year-old mute son in the backseat of his black Mercedes in the driveway and then walked to the end of the driveway to get the recycling container, and took it to the back.

A teen suspect lurking from a blue car across the street exited the vehicle and sprinted towards the driveway.

The suspect entered the vehicle then sped away with the boy inside.

Police say the teen suspects abandoned the car in the area of Grant and Laurel Avenue before fleeing the scene.

They were captured by police several hours later and charged with multiple infractions, including child endangerment and receiving stolen property.
