Police in Irvington Township are looking for a suspect who stole a vehicle with a child inside Wednesday morning.

Officials told RLS Media the incident happened in the 100 block of Elmwood Avenue just before 8 a.m.

Police said the father put his 7-year-old son in a running vehicle just before the thief approached.

At that point, police say the male suspect jumped in the car and drove off with the man’s son inside.

Irvington Police officers, who were already on routine patrol in the area, swiftly located the car a few blocks away with the kid inside.

Officials said the child was not physically harmed.

Mayor Tony Vauss reminds residents to never leave an unattended vehicle running at any time. This is an easy target for a thief and a dangerous situation for everyone involved.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Irvington Police Department Detective Division at this time.
