Retired Belleville Police Officer Charged in Shooting Brother in Nutley

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is investigating a shooting in Nutley.

Authorities said a retired Belleville Police Officer John Towey, 62, of Nutley has been charged with aggravated assault for shooting his 58-year- old brother who is hospitalized in stable condition at University hospital in Newark.

One bullet pierced the victim's spine Authorities said. The shooting occurred last Saturday night at Towey's Race Street home. His brother had been staying with him for the past few days according to authorities.

Towey has been taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark. He is being held on $75,000 bail.
