Nursing Student Beaten, Robbed While Waiting for Bus in Newark

Newark

"My child has never been hit by a man in 21 years. I feel so helpless that I was not there to protect her as I always have been. Trusting God will help us through and to replace her lost items." (Mother of Victim)

The mother of a 21-year-old nursing student who was beaten and robbed on a Newark street is speaking out urging anyone waiting for buses around the city to please watch their surroundings.

It was Friday evening at around 8 p.m. when Sharon Kane an honor nursing student at The Essex County College was waited for a bus after changing at Market Street and Bergen Street just steps outside of a McDonalds Restaurant. Kane said a male suspect (who appeared to have been waiting for a bus) swiftly walked away in the direction of the Georgia King Village housing complex returning a short time later with at least two other males with him.

The original male suspect described by Kane as a 6' 2" thin African American male wearing dark clothing, approached her demanding money and personal possessions. Kane, very nervous and scared, didn't even have two seconds to hand over to the suspect several items, before the man viciously punched her in the face with a closed fist, knocking her to the concrete.

The suspect then "ran through" Sharon's pockets, taking cash (used to pay for college nursing books), a Galaxy Cell Phone, and a bag before fleeing the scene. Kane was able to escape for cover where she used a phone belonging to a passerby to call her mom. Kane also believes that the men robbed at least one other person in the area.

Kane was driven to a police precinct by her mom who then filed a robbery report. Kane's mom then transported her to St. Michael Hospital where she was treated for a minor injury.

"These guys are running around in packs robbing innocent people and most of the victims don't bother to report the crimes to police. I am hoping to replace my daughters lost items and book payments the best way I can",  Kane's mom said.
