Newark and North Jersey residents should brace for stormy weather as heavy rain and thunderstorms are on the horizon.
While the day is starting warm and humid, National Weather Service meteorologists said it will be marked by hit-or-miss showers throughout the day, although it's not expected to be a complete washout.
With humidity levels at 87%, NWS forecasters say the air will feel notably moist and heavy.
A light east wind blowing at three mph will provide some relief from the humidity, but residents should prepare for the muggy conditions.
NWS forecasters say the barometer reading of 29.76 suggests unstable atmospheric pressure, indicating a propensity for stormy weather patterns.
There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms forecasted before 9 a.m., followed by showers likely and the possibility of a thunderstorm between 9 a.m. and noon.
NWS forecasters say showers and thunderstorms are expected to become more likely as the day progresses. Some of these storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall, which may lead to localized flooding in certain areas.
The day will remain mostly cloudy, with a high temperature near 82 degrees. A southeast wind, ranging from 5 to 11 mph, will pick up, bringing a slight breeze to the region.
According to NWS meteorologists, there is a 60% chance of precipitation throughout the day, with new rainfall amounts predicted to range between a quarter and half an inch.
While not torrential, these accumulations can still contribute to wet conditions.
Residents should be aware that heavy rain on Sunday has already caused some roads to flood. With more rain expected tonight, it's crucial to exercise caution when traveling and avoid areas prone to flooding, especially in Passaic County.
