A woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash late Saturday night in New Brunswick, prompting authorities to charge a North Brunswick man in connection with the fatal incident.
According to information released by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, the collision occurred around 10:41 p.m. on May 24 at the intersection of Lee Street and Suydam Street.
When officers arrived, they found 48-year-old Elvia Gavarrete of New Brunswick suffering from serious injuries.
She was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Following a swift investigation by New Brunswick Police Officer Mark Smith and Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Shadi Zaiton, authorities determined that a pickup truck had struck Gavarrete before fleeing the scene.
The vehicle was later found with damage consistent with a pedestrian strike.
The driver, identified as 41-year-old Juan Martinez-Gaspar of North Brunswick, was arrested without incident.
He has been charged with second-degree Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has surveillance footage from the area is urged to contact Officer Mark Smith of the New Brunswick Police Department.
The investigation remains active.
