As of 4:30 a.m., residents in Newark, Bloomfield, Elizabeth, Kearny, and surrounding areas are waking up to soaking rain and chilly conditions as the storm continues to move through the region.

The National Weather Service has issued an alert for persistent rain throughout the day, urging commuters to dress warmly and carry rain gear.

Today’s forecast calls for a steady temperature near 51 degrees, with a northeast wind blowing at 13 to 16 mph and gusts reaching up to 29 mph.

NWS forecasters say the rain, which began Wednesday, is expected to be heaviest during the morning commute, making travel slow and visibility poor on local roads and highways.

For those planning to attend the Beyoncé “Cowboy Carter” concert at MetLife Stadium tonight, the rain is expected to taper off by the evening hours, but showers may linger through about 2 a.m.

A poncho or umbrella is still strongly advised.

Tonight’s forecast includes continued rain through early evening, with a low around 46 degrees.

Bundle up, plan ahead, and stay dry, New Jersey.
