Newark New Jersey

Students from Newark's North Ward Luis Munoz Marin School for Social Justice celebrated Read Across America, a country-wide educational initiative promoting the importance of reading and learning on Monday.

School officials said the vital event encouraged  students to participate in reading activities as part of their educational growth and success.

"Although it was the first day for the PARCC Assessment for the district, the Read Across America event brought in guest readers and activities for the students to help them remember that every moment is a teachable moment and learning experience", school officials said.

"The students and staff humbly appreciated all of our special guests and their selfless act of kindness in spending the afternoon with our school", officials continued. The school was visited by speakers from various professions  including NFL football player Jay Alford; author Rahiem Allen; Pour Artist Michelle Alexander; singer Jayro Rosado; students from NJIT; and our well-known community hero, Batman.

"All of our guests effectively communicated the long-term benefits and importance of reading and learning for our kids in Newark. The students celebrated in a variety of activities and lessons including listening to readers, poetry, painting, planting and sharing healthy snacks" officials said.

There was an end of the day treat called in by the Newark Police Department, (all the way from Gotham City) Batman drove up in his famous Bat Mobile, allowing students to take plenty of selfie photos.

"All of the students, from Pre-K to 8th, truly enjoyed this special day. The students at Luis Munoz Marin School for Social Justice in Newark were encouraged to remember learning is a daily commitment among the entire community" school officials concluded.
