Newark Police Investigate Early Morning Shooting in South Ward

Authorities are currently investigating an early morning shooting that took place in the South Ward of Newark on Tuesday.

The incident unfolded at approximately 2:10 a.m. when Newark Police received an alert from a ShotSpotter activation in the 50s block of Empire Street.

Upon reaching the scene, officers discovered several shell casings scattered about the area. Despite a thorough search of the vicinity, no victims were found.

In response to the incident, the Newark Major Crimes Response team requested the assistance of a Crime Scene unit to aid in the ongoing investigation.

The suspect responsible for the shooting had fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement, and as of now, no arrests have been reported.

Authorities are working diligently to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the motive behind the shooting.
