Newark Man Pleads Guilty to Check Theft, Bank Fraud Scheme

In a recent court proceeding, Malachi Jefferson, a 25-year-old resident of Newark, New Jersey, admitted to participating in a check theft and bank fraud operation, as announced by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.AdThe guilty plea was entered on April 22, 2024, before U.S. District Judge Julien X. Neals in the federal court of Newark.

The scheme, which unfolded from April 2022 to November 2022, involved a conspirator who worked for the U.S. Postal Service and stole checks from a post office in Keansburg, New Jersey.

Jefferson and his accomplices then deposited these checks fraudulently, successfully extracting over $150,000 from various financial institutions.

Jefferson now faces severe penalties, with potential sentencing including up to 30 years in prison and fines reaching $1 million.

His sentencing is scheduled for September 9, 2024, where the full consequences of his actions will be determined.
