Scheduled for Friday, December 29, from 10:00 pm to 3:30 am, this initiative involves a DWI Checkpoint at the intersection of Paterson Plank Road and Hope Street, straddling the Jersey City and Hoboken border.

The operation is a proactive measure to identify and deter drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Sheriff Schillari emphasized that the main goal of the checkpoint is deterrence rather than arrests. "The Hudson County Sheriff's Office prioritizes public safety. Our focus is on preventing impaired driving, not just apprehending offenders," he stated.

The Sheriff also highlighted that impairment isn't limited to alcohol consumption.

Prescription and over-the-counter medications can equally affect a person's driving ability. To augment the checkpoint's efforts, the Sheriff's Office plans to deploy additional patrols across the county.

These measures are part of their commitment to the Hudson County Vision Zero Task Force, aiming to enhance roadway safety for all.

In light of the upcoming holiday season, Sheriff Schillari shared several safety tips to help protect drivers and pedestrians:

  • Opt for mass transit, taxis, car services, or rely on a sober friend for transportation.
  • Consider staying overnight at the location of the event or party.
  • Report impaired drivers to law enforcement immediately.
  • Always wear seat belts as they are the most effective defense against impaired drivers. Intoxicated pedestrians should take a cab or be accompanied by a sober individual to ensure a safe arrival home.
  • Act responsibly by preventing intoxicated individuals from driving.

These measures underscore Hudson County's commitment to reducing the dangers of impaired driving and ensuring safer roads for the community.
