Former Newark Man Gets 4 Years for Role in Fatal Shooting of East Orange Woman

A former Newark resident was sentenced today to four years in state prison for his role in the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old East Orange woman. 

Superior Court Judge Carolyn Wright sentenced Washington to four years for his role in the April 14, 2011 that killed Arlene Fields.

On the evening of April 14, Washington instructed three armed individual to intimidate two others in the area, according to Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

However, the intimidation escalated and resulted in one of the armed individuals to opened fire. Ultimately striking Fields, who according to authorities was an innocent bystander.

Interviews with witnesses helped authorities determined that Washington did not fire the shots. 

The shooter has yet been identified.
