Family of Union County Couple Stranded in Cabo San Lucas Pleads for Their Safe Return

Roselle Park

The family of a Roselle Park couple pleads for their loved ones and all other Americans to return from the storm-ravaged Cabo San Lucas.

Amber and Jeff Grossmueller both of Roselle Park, traveled to Cabo San Lucas for their 10-year wedding anniversary, not thinking that their long weekend getaway would be extended.

Today, the family is asking for help in getting their loved ones back home. The stranded couple has three small children – seven, two, and a newborn – that are anxiously waiting their return.

Thousands are trapped in Cabo San Lucas and the government is not allowing aid to come and transport citizens out of Baja California, family members told RLS.

We want to spread the word to get locals out and back to their families. There is limited contact, no fresh water, food or power in the area, said the family.

The last contact we had with them was yesterday afternoon, but the connection was very poor, the family added.

A U.S. Consulate General Tijuana issued the following, “The storm has left a great many dangers in its wake, including: downed power lines, stagnant water, falling masonry and roofing materials.  In addition, there have been reports of looting and robberies of people on the street.  U.S. citizens should take care to minimize their exposure to potentially dangerous situations. Storm shelters have been established throughout the area.  However, some shelters are reporting a lack of food and water.

Currently the airport in Los Cabos is temporarily closed; we do not know when the airport will be operational again.

The latest update – dated September 16 - said as follows, “Mexican military authorities are now evacuating travelers from the three operational airports: San Jose de los Cabos International Airport, Los Cabos Airport, and La Paz Airport. Travelers should assess the safest route to the nearest airport and move there expeditiously during daylight hours. We can confirm that only a limited number of commercial flights are departing the airport in Los Cabos.  Routine commercial flights will be available once the airport fully reopens.  If you have flight tickets, you should confirm your flight status with your airline before departing for the airport.  Most businesses in affected area are only accepting cash.”

The State Department has established a crisis hotline to respond to inquiries about current conditions and loved ones in the impacted area. If you require assistance personally, or wish to inquire on behalf of a friend or family member, please use the following call 1-888-407-4747 or send email to OdileEmergencyUSC@state.gov.
