Early Morning Shooting Shuts Down McCarter Highway in Newark

A stretch of McCarter Highway in Newark was briefly shut down Friday morning as police investigated reports of gunfire that triggered a ShotSpotter alert in the area.
 

According to preliminary information, the alert was activated shortly after 3:30 a.m. near Clay Street. 

 

Multiple Newark police units responded to the scene and discovered shell casings along the roadway, prompting officers to detour traffic from the busy corridor.

As part of the investigation, officers located a suspicious vehicle abandoned near Mill Street.

 

Authorities believe the individuals involved in the shooting fled the area and left the vehicle behind.

 

No injuries were reported, and the Newark Shooting Response Team is assisting with the ongoing investigation. 

 

Police have not released any information about potential suspects.
