CAR CRASH? Six Things to Do Immediately After

New Jersey

By: Candice E. Iheme, Esq.

Getting into a car crash can be a chaotic and stressful experience. In such moments, it's crucial to stay composed and informed.

Here are six essential things you need to know when you find yourself in a car accident helping you navigate the situation more effectively and ensuring your safety and well-being.

1. Call the police- a police report is one of the most important documents in a car accident case. They provide insurance information, a narrative report detailing what the initial statements were, and help determine which party caused the accident.

2. Exchange insurance information with the other driver- police reports can sometimes take a while to be published, especially if tickets were issued or if someone was arrested. Getting the other car's insurance information allows you to immediately start a claim with their insurance. This can expedite the amount of time it takes to get your car fixed.

3. Take as many photos as possible- take photos of your car's damage, the other car's damage, the final resting place of both cars, where the accident actually took place, any skid marks or debris on the ground, any hazards in the road, the other person's license, the other person's insurance identification card, and anything else which you believe may be helpful.

4. Go to the hospital- with soft tissue injuries, it is common to not immediately realize you are injured. Get checked out by a professional to ensure you are truly okay. This will also create a record of your initial complaints.

5. Do not post on social media- your posts, even if later deleted, can be obtained and used against you at trial.

6. Call me for a free consultation- Call an experienced law firm, like the Haddad Law Firm, which has recovered millions of dollars for its clients. We can guide you every step of the way. Do not make any statements to any insurance companies before consulting with an attorney. Your initial statements can and will be used against you.
