ALERT: Extreme Heat Warning Issued as Newark Braces for Sweltering Conditions

Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

The National Weather Service has issued a high-intensity heat warning for Newark and much of the tri-state area as the region enters what is expected to be a multi-day heatwave. As of Sunday morning, temperatures in downtown Newark were already climbing, with mostly clear skies and a reading of 74 degrees.

Forecasters warn that the heat will intensify rapidly, with highs near 95 degrees and heat index values potentially reaching 103. A west wind between 8 to 13 mph will offer little relief from the oppressive conditions.

City officials have responded by opening cooling centers across Newark to provide residents with safe, air-conditioned spaces.

The move comes as part of broader efforts to mitigate the health risks associated with extreme heat, particularly for seniors, young children, and those without access to adequate cooling.

Those attending early Sunday church services are advised to dress lightly and stay hydrated, as temperatures are expected to soar by midday.

The National Weather Service forecasts partly cloudy skies tonight, with a warm low around 79 degrees and light west winds between 5 to 9 mph.

There is a 20% chance of precipitation.

Residents are urged to take precautions during this extended heatwave, which could last at least four days. Stay indoors when possible, drink plenty of fluids, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
