19-Year-Old Man Shot Dead on Newark Street

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office have identified the young man fatally injured in an early morning shooting in Newark. 

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable have announced that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this morning  in Newark, NJ. 

The incident occurred in the 100 block of Avon Avenue shortly before 1:00 am where Newark police officers responded to reports of shots fired in that area authorities said. Arriving officers located a male, who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, lying outside. The victim, who has been identified as Shyheim Rawls, age 19, of Newark, was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:23 am according to authorities. 

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. The investigation is  ongoing and active at this time, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S.
